Organic Cotton is healthier for you, your children and the environment.

Seed Preparation:

Seeds from organic farming are not treated with pesticides and fungicides and are not genetically modified.

Soil and Water:

Crop rotation builds healthy soil and requires less water to grow. Conventional cotton farming uses synthetic fertilizers and requires intensive irrigation.  Run-off from conventional farming is far-reaching, causing harm to our lakes, streams, rivers and oceans.

Weed Control:

Weeds are controlled by herbicides in conventional cotton farming.  In organic farming, weeds are controlled by hand-weeding or hand-hoeing.

Pest Control:

Conventional cotton farming accounts for 25% of the world’s insecticide use. Insecticides are dangerous for people, animals and the environment. The most commonly used insecticides are highly toxic and some can even cause cancer. Aerial spraying of crops causes air pollution and the effects of aerial spraying can cause damage miles away from where the crop was sprayed. In organic farming, insects which eat cotton are controlled by the introduction of predator insects and by the use of trap crops which lure insects away from the cotton plants.

Harvesting:

Chemicals are used to defoliate the cotton plants in conventional farming.
In organic farming, seasonal freeze or water management is used to defoliate the cotton plants.
